I loved “Alberto’s Adventures on The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu” Are you going to write more books?

Sean and Alberto are glad you enjoyed their book! They are already working on the second book about Alberto’s Adventures on the Kokoda Trail. They plan to create many more books about Alberto’s Adventures around the world.

What are your favourite children’s books

The Gruffalo, Dr Seuss books and anything involving rhythm and rhyme. Sean enjoyed reading Enid Blyton books when he was young. Sean thinks dolphins are cute, so any book about dolphins is also a favourite.

Where do you get your ideas?

Sean gets his ideas from everywhere. Even a bird singing in a tree can inspire something. You never know what might come in handy. If anything happens Sean writes it down. It took him a while to develop this habit but somewhere along the way he started doing it automatically. We all lead interesting lives and have great ideas. The simple difference between a writer and a non-writer is that a writer will write things down. It’s up to you to write your message and pass it along to others. PS. Did you know that fizzy drinks can give you gas, so don’t drink too many fizzy drinks.

How long have you been writing?

Sean has been writing most of his life. Since he was young he loved to write poems and short stories. Sean particularly enjoys the flow of rhythm and rhyme. He feels that poems are an effective way to create images that touch you more deeply. Stories come to Sean as images or scenes and he does his best to describe them in writing.

How do you describe the life of a writer?

Lots of work. One day Sean found a sausage behind his ear and realised he must have eaten his pencil for lunch. You need to keep practicing and refining your craft. It’s like playing a musical instrument or riding a bike. You can’t expect to be an expert within a short period of time. It requires dedication and you should do it because you love writing. Also take time for yourself and do things that you enjoy. It may not be jumping out of a plane or doing flying trapeze, but just do what you enjoy.

How many books have you written?

Alberto’s Adventures on the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu is Sean’s first solo book. He has also written a short story that is published in an Anthology named “HOPE An Anthology of New Authors” which can be purchased in Amazon by clicking on this link.

Do you like being an author?

Yes, Sean loves being an author because making books for kids is the best! There is NO LIMIT to our imagination and what we can create. Children’s books allow us the chance to explore our imagination. Imagine if the sky was green and the grass was blue… How would the world look? That’s up to you…

How do I know if I’m a writer?

Everyone has a streak of creativity in them. Think of what you like to do. Do you like to sing, play an instrument, dance, draw, paint, create sculptures, build things, or write. We all have at least one thing in this list we prefer to do more than the others. Sean is amazed at how some people create a picture on a blank page, play an instrument or move their body to music with ease. Whatever you enjoy doing, you don’t have to be good at it, but if you enjoy it you can do it more often and that is the seed of your creativity. You simply need to give it time and attention, and it will grow and blossom. Maybe you enjoy writing. If so, you are a writer.

I am very interested in becoming a children’s book illustrator/author. How do I become one?

There are a few children’s book social media groups. If you join some of those groups you can connect with others and take your journey further. You can research children’s publishers, art directors and editors to see what they do. Attend Children’s Writing and Illustration conferences and workshops. Most of all, practice writing, drawing and refine your skills as much as you can. There is no height requirement so short people can write too.

I’ve written a children’s book. How do I get it published?

There are a few ways to publish a book:

Traditional publishing – send your manuscript to a publishing company according to their requirements and wait to see if they will publish it for you. If your book is accepted you will most likely hand over the rights of your book to the publishing company. Many publishing companies may ask you to do a lot of the marketing yourself.

Self-publishing – organise the illustrations, layout, cover, editing, ISBN, registration, printing, eBook, and marketing yourself. This requires a lot of your own time and effort but teaches you about the industry. You maintain all rights for your book.

Publishing service – use a company such as OMNE publishing that will help with the aspects needed to publish your book. You pay for their service and expertise and they allow you to maintain the rights over your work.
